I am really excited about this winner, because they are a good bud of mine, and have almost entered every week, so its great their name finally came up. So without further ado…

That’s right this week we shall all learn about the Border Terrier, entered by the Border Terrier mix himself Gizmo! He is a funny sweet, lovable little furball, who is always up for adventure with his mom, after being rescued by her one fateful day! You can read more about his story HERE (It is quite a tear-jerker but with a happy ending!) Here is an introduction to their site, to learn more about him and their Geotrail adventures click on a picture below.

“Hi! Iโ€™m Gizmoโ€ฆa handsome terrier-about-town with a distinct point of view. I will write about whatever interesting things come across my desk, appear on my twitter feed @GizmoGeodog, or meet me out on the geotrails. I love to geocache cause it takes me to all the wild places & I can get back to being a real dog……..”

Now let’s learn a bit about the Border Terrier.

It is said the border terrier had its start along the border between Northumberland and Scotland. These terriers often were bred and used to run with the foxhobordersoldgardnerwillbartons2und dogs, and horses in order to sniff out and capture foxes. They were usually very good at getting in the very tight sometimes impossible spaces hiding foxes got into.

It is said that the Border terrier is very closely related to theย Bedlington Terrier and theย Dandie Dinmont Terrier terriers (both pretty unique looking if you ask me!)williamcarruthersallenpipersmall

Border Terriers were first shown in the 1870’s at a more regional show in Scotland.

The first BT was registered with the AKC, in 1913, but didn’t gain official recognition till a bit later. This was due to some argument of making the Border Terrier a show dog among it’s enthusiasts, would inevitably make thebtm loose their “working” trait which is what originally made them so sought after. Though the terrier did end up being recognized in 1920.

Interesting fact: One of the most loveable and unforgettable movie actor dogs was actually a border terrier mix (just like Gizzy!), who was known for playing “Benji” in most of the franchise’s films!

Here’s the trailer of Higgins, and the first Benji movie (I think Gizmo would play Benji and little white fluffball is Kirby his sidekick!)

  1. Arr the terrible terriers. They are just the smartest breed. We love these posts and particularly the old photographs. Some breeds have changed so much since they were first introduced.
    Have a terrific Thursday.
    Best wishes Molly

  2. *highpaws* Kirbster! Your momz did a great job telling my story…Some call us “Terrible Terriers” but I just say we’re “Terrier Tough” and proud of it…We BT’s are definitely big dogs in small bodies…You and I could definitely be the dogs in that movie…You and me together could conquer the world with our cuteness…

  3. In German they even have an expression that translates to he goes after it like a Terrier…very determined dogs! Mom said to say that she loved the Benji movies too ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Very interesting. I would like to know about either the Pomeranian or Chihuahua breed, cause I’m both.
