That’s right we are learning about the exotic (I can say that because I’m from Canada) Spanish Water dog submitted by none other then a very funny, and talented blogger friend Doggy’s Style who submitted the Spanish water dog on behalf of HIS (lol Leo) best bud who is one (and may also be a hyena as we learned in recent posts…….)
From his blog: “What made me open this blog was my furry beast called Doggy, I was going to write about the antics I would have to endure, turns out he’s well behaved and doesn’t give me a thing to write so I took over.” …”What you gonna read in here is randomness and typos, a lot of them, hope you enjoy them and don’t mind, I’m too old to change my ways. Thanks for passing by.”
Click on any of the gorgeous pictures of Doggy to skip over to his site!
I award Doggysstyle with this badge!
Now let’s learn about the breed…..
We begin as we often begin in our ancient dogs finding, having many theories as how the Spanish Water Dogs (SWD) came to be. Records that we do have suggest the breed has been around the main wetlands of the Iberian Peninsula since Ancient times.
In southern Spain it was believed the dogs came off Turkish sheep boats, but has since been declared very unlikely. It is believed at this time the ancestors of the SSWD were here at this time and were split into three types of water dogs. One breed was smaller, lighter in colour, and has actually now veered off to become a new breed finally in 2011 called the Cantabrian water dog. The other group was also in Spain and know for having coats made of long and thin cords. The last group is noted as being the largest and strongest of all three. Today, is is said that these three types are all the ancestors and what made the Spanish Water Dog what it is today. It is often believed to be closely linked to the Portuguese water dog!
The SWD was known as a all-around -dog with a strength in herding but would also help fishermen, taught to retrieve with hunters, and worked with farmers.
In about 1975, two SWD enthusiasts, Antonio García Pérez and Santiago Montesinos wanted to help the breed gain more popularity at least in its own country. (which explains to me the lack of old photos)
In 1980 with their help the Spanish Water Dog was formed to help promote the breed.
in 1985, the SWD was accepted into the Spanish Kennel club
In 2012, the breed was accepted into the AKC in the miscellaneous group!

Here’s a video showing just how truly remarkable and versatile this breed is:

Thanks Kirby, I really liked this, I’ll link you my blog later on.
Thank you, we finally won.
You can deposit the money on my bank account in Switzerland, thanks, very kind of you.
Nice post, and FYI, Doggy’s breeder is that Antonio Garcia, he’s very peculiar when it comes to selling his dogs.
I went through a kind of adoption process, he must interview you a couple of times to see if you are fit to have a dog, these are working dogs and need plenty of exercise and stimulation. Once the puppies are born you gotta go and see them, pick yours and keep in touch with him, he’ll never give you a pup less than 60 days old. Then you have to keep hin updated as to how your dog is doing for at least a year.
He breed these dogs for the police and fire department and shepherds also as therapy dogs, hes very responsible I must say. There’s a huge waiting list to get one of his pups but knowing people pays off, that’s how I could get Doggy, otherwise I’d still be waiting.
Just on a side note, I’m a guy, it’s a common mistake, people usually call me Doggy’s mom.
I knew you are a man LEO I swear! Where did I say that! I am off to correct it now lol.Just a mistake I make with the territory lol. And wow you actually got your dog directly from him! That is so coincidental I wrote about him and he is actually your breeder so cool! Your check is in the mail….may it only be used on dog treats! Glad you liked it, and learned even more by reading this!
It’s ok, it wasn’t a big mistake like saying I use skirts too short for work, it was “her buddy”.
Good, those $250,000 will be used wisely.
Thank you!
xx
bahahaha! Don’t worry i fixed it, never should one’s gender come into question on my blog! And 250,000 that’s a little more than I though, not too worry though if I just remortgage my house on the hills it might be enough 😛
Perhaps you should stop dressing up Momma Leona..Bawahaaaaa xx
hahahaha but I like my waxed legs lol
Great dogs and we so enjoy reading about the different breeds. Have a terrific Thursday.
Best wishes Molly
Hmmm…I wonder if I could be a French water dog and not just a GBGV since I love water so much???
you never know, maybe some far off ancestor was!
We’ve never heard of a SWD before so this was really interesting.
Loving the conversation over here – the comments 😉 SO CUTE 🙂

Very interesting. I really enjoyed the video and you can tell Leo (Doggy’s dad), that I expect to see a video like that of all of Doggy’s training or I will think him a slacker. 😆
Doggy’s dad is working on it, he’s a good diver, the agility, well, let’s say he suffers from vertigo and don’t wanna traumatize him yet. Need to buy sheep so he learns how to be a good herder and stop herding dogs at the dog park.
I hear they are having a sale on sheep. 🙂
It’s great to learn more about Doggy. You’ve found some fantastic old photos again!
I don’t know how I do it sometimes, some of these breeds have hardly any flying around the web, but doing some good google digging always helps!
Way to go Doggy. Great to learn more 🙂
Piggy kisses,
Katie and Coccolino the mini pig
Leo is very cute, never heard of that breed. Very nice, thanks for sharing the breed.
Doggy is all over the place. I am finally following him. Why not? He’s everywhere anyway! He’s gorgeous.
Love and licks,
Cupcake
I’ve never heard of a Spanish water dog, very interesting!
You can enter Gracie in the next ancient beginnings contest!
Couldn’t have gone to a better pup! I thought Doggy was a Portuguese Water Dog, I had no idea there was a SWD as well. Eko (a Rhodesian Ridgeback) would like to throw his hat in the ring for next week.
That was great Kirby,I love these posts!xx Speedy
Love those posts! We’re hoping golden retrievers get thrown into the mix!
What a wonderful post – thanks a lot Kirby&Mom :o) Wow and Doggy is a celebrity too – I guessed it :o) I must always laugh, if I read on comments of his blog “doggy’s mom” :o) and hey, his tags are priceless :o)
What a pawesome breed! I will once again try my paw, Kirby and Miss Leah, at winning next week. Please put me in the mix…Oz the Terrier @CairnTerrier

Oh i have seen your banter first hand many times, lol, it is quite hilarious!
Totally new breed for me today Kirbster…I knew about American Water Spaniels and Portuguese Water Dogs but never a Spanish Water Dog…so Momz & I really learned something…Thanks!
Great video and the first time I have seen or read about a Spanish Water dog. I am learning a lot about new dogs. Ok I will enter the Newfs for next week. Have fun Kirby;)
I’ve never heard of a Spanish Water Dog! I’m really impressed! Those are some hard working dogs! Whew! I don’t think I’ll ever win — but I guess if I keep throwing my name in the hat eventually I’ll be the only one left! soo —- @Labrador Retrievers!
Wows, I’ve never heard of the Spanish Water Dog ~ very cool. I love the workin’ doggies!
And, if they all have Doggy’s attitude, they could be cousins of the terriers!!! BOL
Kisses,
Ruby
