Hey guys. So Kirby and I were just laying here and I thought I’d take some time and chat with you all. We have been busy being lazy, but also taking evening strolls, in which I have been enjoying. As we have recently discovered a little path that takes us into a pretty tranquil forest.
I have been continually trying to work on Kirby’s interaction with other dogs. The thing I am trying to continually tame is the fact that if they are big and I guess “scary” looking to him – he will continually bark his head off at them if I try to urge him to say hello. He might even give a little fake jab if they keep avoiding his territory. Though if they are small he is sweet as a lamb usually. I have been researching various methods on how to help him with this, and it might appear I am exposing him too much, and by me trying to stop and make him say hello that is putting extra pressure and stress on him. So for now we have been just calmly walking by these bigger dogs, in which case he then doesn’t give them a second thought.
Anyways here is the little trouble maker in his Kermit the frog outfit. Yes, he likes to sleep with all his toys 🙂
At the shelter, I am happy to say. Although a few weeks ago there was 5-6 dogs up for adoption, there now is only one. He’s a older JRT, who has some sight issues and joint issues. When he first came there, every couple steps he was falling down. Though just last week he is now running around the play area I let him out in and seems to be doing a lot better. Which I am happy to report. Edit- Since writing this I am happy to say the little guy is now adopted! yayyy:)
One more thing for all you WordPress bloggers, has anyone been getting an obscene amount of spam comments lately. The last few months I seem to get at least one or two every day even when I’m not posting. It’s quite annoying

I think you’re on the right track with Kirby and his reactivity to big dogs. Don’t force it…very gradually expose him in safe environments and distances with lots praise when he focuses on you and not them. Hurray for the sweet JRT. And spam…yes! Better in the past couple of weeks…but really bad there for a while.
Thanks over, Yea I definetly realized my mistakes, forcing him to interest rather then letting him go and mingle at his own pace. Yea the spam has been better the last week or two
It’s great that you take the time to discover the possible reasons behind the behaviour and then act on it 🙂 Most times I find even the most aggressive of dogs once freed from the restraints of the lead and it’s potential for hindering self defence when dog deems neccessary, plays like puppy with those great big dogs!
Lovely tale and happy ending for the final rehoming dog great job being done by all…feed that excessive spam to the dogs lol 😉
Great to get news! Kirby seems to be doing well and the shelter news is fab. Not noticed too much spam but it does go in cycles.

he is such a cute guy… I could do nothing than to watch him the whole day :o) I’m glad that so much dogs found a new home, thanks to you, to the shelter and the people who adopted a pet.
btw: I’ve got a lot of spam too and this time not even the spam-police of WP could ban them… there were porn-comments too, it’s really annoying :o(

Lovely to hear about your walks with Kirby,sounds like you’re getting on top of the Big dog little dog thing,I get spam on Speedy’s main blog but they got to a spam box so I just delete them all every so often,xx Rachel

I think your laying off the meet n greet with large dogs is best for Kirby. Dogs interpret things differently than we do. What you preceive as him ‘meeting’ a larger dog Kirby probably sees as a threat because you are pointing the larger dog out. So by jsut ignoring the other dogs Kirby does mot preceive them to be a ‘threat’ & therefore does not need to bark & ‘protect’ you!!

P.S.: We barely ever get SPAM altho a week ago it was there daily. Has stopped again. Just keep deleting & they will get tired & move on…..(hopefully…)
You should probably try Akismet if they allow it on WordPress.com. It is a spam service that is developed and maintined by Automattic, the company behind WordPress, and works well. I’ve started using other spam tools including Akismet since it can get pretty crazy.
Just look at it this way, the more spam you have the more successful your website is. 🙂
