More adoptions & big and smalls -WW

I hope you are all enjoying your summer. whether that be jumping into lots of lakes and playing in the nice green grass, or for the two legged enjoying the sunshine and being with your furry best friend.

I have been continuing enjoying my time working at the shelter, and just wanted to share a few more happy adoption pictures! This little guy although may look like a full grown Shih-tzu still had his baby teeth coming in so he is definitely a mix of something a little larger. Lhasa Apso perhaps? What do you guys think? Either way I had the privilege of getting to know him on a few walks and play times till he was happily adopted into a loving forever home, I even got to say goodbye to the little one first hand.

Not only that but in accordance to adopt a cat month, I am happy to say more then a few kittens have been adopted this week too!

Today my friend came over with her adorable American Bulldog Savior, and I quickly got a few snaps with him and the boys, before he proceeded to gallop on about his merry little way. Kirby was a little nervous when Savior got too close (but him being still a rambunctious pup) I was still proud of the progression he has made with dealing with the bigger guys as he handled it all pretty good 🙂

IMAG0970 copy

I couldn’t get over in this picture how so very small Kirby looked compared to Savior! Aren’t they just the cutest pair!

IMAG0973 copy

No, that is not a small garden decoration in the background.

Sorry not much of a post today, as this week for some reason I feel a little at a loss for words, but I wanted to get this up in usual time:) Hope you guys all continue to have a amazing week!

ZOMBIESS!!! A thanks for Pet-N-Style

Hi all! Sorry for not writing or being on the blogosphere for a while, our internet took a vacation last Wednesday, and it finally came back from it today!

I wanted to start out saying a BIG thank you to Pet-N-Style who graciously send us some products for Kirby and Poe. As well as the wonderful letter! They state in it that ” We at Pet-N-Style are offering these items as free samples to you as a potential customer to do with as you wish. We require absolutely nothing in return for these items…”

Though I really wanted to write something about these guys. They are so great. First off they are family operated and run. I really do like supporting companies like this whenever we can. What really made us smile was that they are a proud member of the ASPCA, and assist local animal rescues using their media outlets and connections. I think that is such an admirable quality for any company to give back to the community, and to do with animals who need it, well that just touches my heart.

Anyways, I wanted to show you guys some of the goodies they got . Including some that may help in the future to help in any zombie mishaps!!! XD

It’s a Star Wars collar and leash. Its so cute and so Poe’s style, thank you so much Pet-N-Style.

See all the other stuff we got in our video, as i wanted to give a little thank you again. What do you guys think? Plus we are giving stuff away if interested, watch!

Because all my animals are boys, I decided we wanted to give the adorable little heart collar and heart-key charm to one or two of our lovely little bloggy followers. So if you would like me to send you it, please comment on this post below, and tell me which one you want, and we’ll ship it to you right away…..just because we appreciate everyone who reads our blog, and would really love to share the love Pet-N-Style gave us!

And my ahem….our most favorite is a necessity Poe and Kirby will need for any future Zombies…..just so they are warned!

Oh yea and here’s Pet-N-Style’s tweet tweet!

About us, frisbees and best buddies!

–First off sorry I haven’t been here in a week! I have been uncommonly busy, and working on this. My life-with pets 🙂

I hope everyone is having a good day, if not, hopefully these pictures will cheer you up 🙂 I know when I am feeling down simply watching Kirby try to wrestle with a toy twice the size of him, or exploring what looks like a whole new world even though he smelt that exact spot the day before, just can help put things in perspective as many things can I suppose. Dogs if given the bare necessities love, food, understanding can be completely happy and enjoy life in their own little world. Sure we may have more problems and be a bit more “complicated” but I think taking a cue from a creature simply happy to be here can speak volumes 🙂
Kirby has a best little buddy who he has made quite good friends with inside the dog park and out. Their personalities seem to collide almost in harmony as they both seem to always have a fun time around each other. I also got a shot of Kirby chasing a Frisbee, far too big for him, but making the best of it all the same! (sorry the pictures are grainy – cell phone).

Snoopy's Dog Blog

Fun with meme

Well it is Saturday. I have given Kirby a bath the day before, and as that is always somehow a very traumatizing experience for him, I decided to give him a break with pictures…well except for this one that I think depicts his fear perfectly prior to bath time.

So to give him a bit of a break, and being inspired by his recent picture I decided to show you guys some of my favorite animal meme’s of all time ……

febac32c9bc179394e86458e5c832b7cbad5e628731960b4fbad49d0ffbd88e9c51c1128b68b80b3a99c5c2cc2f84b83ce4b937445c9497fdc29d290fa1c99be18d791b037555c50f4f6697700a512eec5d3f2a0ad0509dd6f244ee6a68783b22573852bc6ad72bc51a50cc2b6a4c88d95cc2002674f76d360727992174c025bfunny215046950926979821_MeClIhsy_cFor the dog rules, which number did you start off with and which number are you at now!

And just in case anyone missed our last video

NOT so Wordless wednesday- Poe and the intruder!

We missed mischief monday again! How could we, and this time there was lots of mischief to write about. So I guess better late then never. I got the privilege of puppy-sitting one of Kirby’s best buddies Rocco. I know you guys got to see him in a post about a month ago, but man has he grown! He is developing quite the personality as well, which works perfectly for Kirby’s rambunctious self. I took lots of pictures to share with you guys, and uploaded a video about it for those who want to see him in action.
Rocco although cute and playful like Kirby, is quite different than any dog I have ever owned – and no its not just the random snorting he gives every couple seconds, but it has helped put him up there! (Caught a bit on video- see below)

Kirby for example likes to show off his skills by ducking and running under Rocco to show off just how much faster he is, than poor Rocco could ever be, and Rocco simply uses his weight (as its all he has in his defense) to try and pin Kirby for a good play-fight. Rocco is very much a puppy and though he’s learning doesn’t have all the social manners Kirby is used to, that added to him weighing a good solid 15+ pounds already, I had to be sure to supervise that Rocco’s play tactics didn’t accidentally squish the poor little Kirbster XD.

Because he has never met Poe before (our family dog) who has a bit of anti-social behavior due to his past, I had to be on top of my game when introducing the little squirt to him and “his territory”. So I used some of the tips I have mentioned before in my videos. Poe as I suspected wasn’t in for being buddies (unlike Kirby) as when Rocco tried to play with him, Poe would give a little don’t-bug-me growl and walk away. Other then that though they co-existed fine, and Poe was quite content looking a the two bozos
– immature pups (trust me he was thinking it) play and scurry around, not very interesting for a 8 year old boy who would rather lounge with us humans, then have to intermingle with these two rambunctious pups, as they ran and played…and ran and played circles around him.

I did get one shot though of the three of them snuggling together, or should I say Poe lying down and these two snuggling up to him,and him being to lazy to move. Never-the-less it was quite adorable!

Here’s the video, pictures are below it.

I also wanted to thank Trompie (one of our very first blogging buddies) on this fabulous award and want to pass it along.

Hey wordless Wednesday, breaking the rules

Taking cover behind me on my pillows...XD

Taking cover behind me on my pillows…XD

So yes, I realize today is wordless Wednesday, and we don’t like missing it! Already missed it last week, missed Monday Mischief this week, so we refuse to miss anymore, even though technically that doesn’t make it a wordless Wednesday, but we figure breaking the rules once isn’t going to hurt anything. Plus I always think of wordless Wednesday as cute-picture-doggy time, and we have pictures, yes we do!

So, I don’t know about you guys but over here in Canada, we had a storm last night. It wasn’t your average storm, no no. It wasn’t just storming, with rain coming out like a faucet, no, and yes there was thunder, and lightening, but it was the most INTENSE thunder we have ever heard.

This was Kirby’s first thunder storm, and would you believe it the first thunder we heard, partially shook the house! it was so loud, I wanted to look out the window and start barking. Luckily, Poe and Kirby were already at it. Poe was more on guard, ready to attack the thunder storm, while poor little Kirby was scared out of his mind, that it was a simple “fight or flight” for him, and he decided to do both. Luckily, after a few minutes, the thunder calmed down to be more “normal” and Kirby stopped caring.  I wanted to quickly capture for you guys, Kirby’s reaction to all this in pictures, sorry they are grainy my phone was what I had quickly on me to snap a few shots.

Maybe If I can just blend into the sheets, no one will see me?

Maybe If I can just blend into the sheets, no one will see me?

After the window was checked......

After the window was checked……

Oh and here is what his little shirt says, I am kinda a hippie at heart so had to pick this up!

So without further ado…..

Whooooo. The winner is 2 Brown Dawgs Blog with their beautiful Chesapeake Retriever’s Storm, Thunder, and Freighter. Just click any of the beautiful pictures below to learn more about these Chesapeake Bay Retrievers!

Now snuggle up and read on about how exactly this fantastic breed came to be…Now I know 2browndawgs, your very knowledgeable on your breed, so hopefully this post does okay in your books! 🙂

The Chesapeake bay retriever is relatively new in comparison to the previous  winner Clowie. Though to us humans, and even in comparison to many of the “newer” dog breeds out there the Chesapeake definitely has ancient beginnings, which are quite detailed at that.

pollyIt has been first recorded that some of the first Chesapeake Bay Retrievers started off with two young pups thought to be St. John water dogs in 1807, aboard a floundering ship, that were rescued by a George Law, a sailor on another ship. The male was named Sailor and the female canton. As there were no cameras the only proof is in the man’s writings which depict a dog in personality and likeness to the Chesapeake. The man found them aboard a wrecked ship it is said with intoxicated sailors, and that is where he rescued them and bought them off the captain for a guinea a piece. Though because he was set to sail off for sea again, he gave them away to a man named John Mercer and a doctor while still being docked at Norfolk in Virginia. (This is starting to sound like a great movie to me!)

As John Mercer and the doctor were both avid hunters, it is then that both men discovered these dogs in the hunting fields were exceptional. This is what led to these dogs being sought after by local duck hunters.  It is thought Sailor is the dog that started the offspring we know today, as he was exchanged for a ram to a governor in Maryland. Though both Sailor and Canton were bred with local dogs, which is thought to be the real start of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Dogs from both Chesapeake Bay shores were recognized as one of three types of Chesapeake Bay Ducking Dog in 1877.

Other names given to the Chesapeake bay Retriever’s at one point were the Chesapeake bay duck dog, the brown Winchester, the otter dog, the Newfoundland duck dog, and the Red Chester Ducking dog.220px-Chesapeake_Bay_Retriever_circa_1915

In 1887 a definite permanent evolution of the dog was now prominent,, which was its dark brown/reddish brown colouring.

At one point there were They were fully recognized by the AKC in 1878, and became the official dog of Maryland in 1964.

Dr. John Lundy the President of the American Chesapeake Club from 1957-1959

At one point in the 1930’s to 1950 Chesapeake’s fell on the back-burner a bit when there began a big decline in waterfowl (What the Chesapeake’s were known for) and were often overlooked to be field trial dogs due to them being labelled as too “pretty”. It was this misjudgment that made many retriever fancier’s turn away thinking they would be no good at it. It is noted that with the help of the American Chesapeake club that CBR’s began to get their popularity back, and true sporting nature known.

The Chesapeake’s are said to be related to the St. John’s water dog (known as being retriever’s ancestors), Newfoundland dog. They are also said to have hounds and spaniels in them as well, though it seems unclear as to any more detail of which breeds1920s-Newf specifically.

Lastly, just for fun some famous people known for having the Chesapeake’s include Theodore Rosevelt, and actor Paul Walker (fast & the furious) and of course Thunder Storm and Freighter of the wonderful blog who inspired this all 2browndawgs.

Now for the badge I award 2browndawgs with this! 🙂 Aswell as CLOWIE if your reading this.

Clowie’s Great Pyrenees

A quiet moment - we're exhausted!

First off let me just say that the Great Pyrenees is one I was very excited to do as I think they are so gorgeous and who wouldn’t love a big white teddy bear? So how did this huge white fluff ball start out? Well everyone take a seat (including you Clowie!) grab some popcorn and read away!

$(KGrHqIOKiIE5cLjSW6rBO(jLOjLMQ~~_12The great Pyrenees like his bud the Maltese, is considered a very old breed. It is believed that ancestors of these large white livestock guardians migrated with shepherds from Asia about 5000 years ago. Though some of the first true representations of the breed were found as early as 1407! Though if you think that is crazy it is thought the breed actually first originated between 1800-1000 B.C! Their name came from where they were first known to being founded from which is from people who inhabited the Pyrenees Mountains, of southern France and Northern Spain. His/her first use to the human mind and hands was to be a herding dog. This breed was a undercover spy of sorts, because of it’s fluffy white coat it often blended in with the herd, meaning it got a good catch on bears and wolves that got to close to the herd thinking Clowie’s ancestor was just another sheep! The great Pyrenees became a extremely valuable right hand man to Shepard’s, and were just as much a companion as a working dog for them, Here is a video of them in the past:

$(KGrHqFHJB8F!h3liKG,BQeWqU6BHg~~60_35In the 1600’s the Great Pyrenees actually became a dog of royalty as it is seen, and was dubbed the royal dog of France by Dauphin Louis in the 17th century.By the early 19th century there was a high demand for the dog in mountain towns, and thus began their travels to other parts of the world. During World war 1, they were used often to smuggle contraband over the french/Spanish border through routes inaccessible to men.The Great Pyrenees gained widespread prominence after it was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1933.$(KGrHqEOKooE4t4Q6O1ZBO(joeJvzw~~_3livestock guarding dog puppy

-It is widely thought through expedition that the Great Pyrenees was descended from mastiff-type dogs.Dogs the Pyrenees is said to be associated with or maybe a tad bit related to is the Maremma sheepdog, Kuvasz, and akbash dog! It is even noted that they may be somewhat related as well to the St.Bernard.

1934The great Pyrenees temperament in the past was one of what would seem like a motherly role. They were often naturally nocturnal and aggressive to anything that would harm it’s flock. Yet was trusted with small, young and helpless animals due to its guardian instinct (or I like to say it’s compassionate instinct) showing just how kind this gentle giant really is! In now a day terms that temperament has transferred to the domestic Pyrenees, as they are known for being very gentle, affectionate and kind to children. Though its instincts still kick in with loyalty to its family as it is a fearless breed and will protect its family when necessary. Though for the most part the breed is pretty calm and demure.

-And here are the results

paw_15px.jpg Thanks to everyone who voted and if your guys didn’t get picked remember to nominate him/her BELOW for next week’s edition!

P.S- Happy Valentine’s day everyone!

Ancient Dog and Valentine fundraiser sandwhich for one!

Hello all, and Happy Monday! So Kirby and I have a thought! And well Poe to yes he was also thinking on this process…

On to to other news I have decided to do something a bit different today, that is to start a fun little activity so we can all get to know each other’s dogs  better and pay tribute to the breed!

  • It will be every  held every Saturday . When the first “Ancient Beginnings” posts start and from then on you can enter your dog in the comments for the next one
  • How it works is you will leave a comment below the first ancient beginning’s post once it is set up, and add the symbol (@) and then the name and breed of your dog (if he is a mixed pick the breed you would like to know about).
  • a commenter out of the comments below will be picked by by Thursday night to get a whole post dedicated to their  dog/cat/hamster/mixed breeds in learning their ” ancient beginnings!”
  • The best part is the blogger who gets picked can make their own post instead if they wish about their breeds ancient beginning’s and I will simply do a quick recap of what they had to say and include links for the readers to go check out the story on the picked blogger’s post.
  • Though who knows, I might be the only geeky animal-lover in here who is fascinated to find out about the origins of our breeds. So I decided to create a poll, a straight forward yay or neigh to see if this is a good idea. SO PLEASE VOTE BELOW.
  • I will let the poll run for a week as the first one will be next Saturday, so even though we don’t know if this is happening for sure start entering you animal if you want to be picked.
  • entries will be cut off at the end of friday, so I can find out the winner for Saturday’s post

Anyways like it or not the rest of this post will be My kirby’s ancient beginnings. Since he is a Maltese and Yorkie, I had to pick one and I picked the one I think he most resembles in looks and character and that is the Maltese.

  • Though it can only be estimated the earliest recorded suggestion that the breed Maltese were apart of our earth was roughly 500 B.C on the island of Malta.
  • where they migrated over during that time to Egypt and Greece, which we know through subtle drawings and artifacts.
  • Ancient dogs related to the  Maltese were said to be Lhasa Apso,  Tibetan Terrier, Tibetan spaniel and the pekingese
  • Their name Maltese was taken from Malta and said to mean “white fluffy cloud”Sun_in_white_cloud
  • Malta served  as a center of trade for a time and even then the Maltese was looked on as a highly valuable animal simply based on its small size, adorable traits, and novelty.
  • Maltese were very popular with wealthy Roman women who carried them as lap dogs and companions.
  • After the breed survived the fall of Rome due to its popularity, a pair was given to Chinese Emperor Kou Tzu around 620 A.D and it is there that the Maltese breed began to make its way around the world.
  • Said to be Queen Victoria's Maltese 1839

Said to be Queen Victoria’s Maltese 1839

  • By the 13th century the Maltese had become a breed now known in European countries, often being bartered for other goods.
  • by 1558, the breed was well established in Britain so much so that Queen Victoria owned one..
  • Maltese continued to be popular with the ladies for their beauty, companionship, and sometimes as living flea traps for the wealthy.
  • At this stage the more smaller the breed the more appealing they were, some not bigger then common ferrets, sometimes described as the size of squirrels even.1074
  • In the Renaissance area Maltese were believed to  possess healing powers, some methods included placing the dog o

n the sick person’s pillow ,or could relieve indigestion if placed on the stomach. This is when the got the nickname comforter dogs.

  • The Maltese continued to be popular  even during the Victorian era , where it was common for them to have long silky coats ,hair tied in satin ribbons, and were even dyed to match the colour of their lady’s attire.
  • IN 1888 Maltese were accepted into the AKC.
Maltese 1904

Maltese 1904

  • Maltese came in a variety of colours till the early 1900’s

As one can maybe get the hint, up until their early days of life and evolution they were lucky enough to be respected and adorned similar to how they all are to this day. Not much has changed in this pampered pooche’s life, perhaps which is in fact what makes it so domesticated and pleasant in this day and age.

Me and Kirby just wanted to finally thank Anne Paws who generously making us this absolutely POSITIVELY adorable little picture of Kirby. Right now Pawsitively pets has a charity fundraiser going on where if you donate $1 (or more!) you will be not only helping a animal based charity but Ann will personally make you a fun Valentine’s greeting card, which I am going to be showing loud and proud on the right hand side, so if you click the button there you will be redirected to her fundraiser campaign. Also she will randomly select out of everyone who has donated with a charity in mind, which charity will be picked!

Thanks again Snoopy for the blog hop, click the button below to start a hoppin!

P.S.- IS anybody else’s wordpress reader so slow that it is just continually loading?I noticed they changed the layout for the new reader could this be the problem?
